The wise counsel of a mother

“…do not forsake the law of your mother;” – Proverbs 1:8

The little boy Glenn Cunningham was fatherless. He was brought up by his loving mother with great care. At his small age, his mother impressed on his heart the Bible verses such as, “All things are possible to him who believes” and “Whoever believes will not act hastily.” Glenn’s ambition was to become an Olympic athlete. His mother knew that it was an unattainable goal. But she encouraged him saying, “Have faith in God; do good work that is pleasing to God. The Lord will fulfill your heart’s desire.”

Glenn was doing 4th grade in a Primary School in a small village. That school was run for the underprivileged children. As the children did not wear suitable clothing to withstand the extreme cold, they were shivering from cold in the classroom. The school would be over by 1 O’ clock. On his way back home, Glenn used to collect some firewood. He used to reach school before the arrival of his teacher and other students. He began to make a fire to keep his classroom warm for everyone. Glenn was so gratified to see his friends enjoying the warmth of the fire. He thanked God for helping him to do something good to others.

One day, when he was stoking a fire, an explosion took place. Glenn’s legs were badly burnt in the fire accident. The doctors predicted that he might never walk normally again. Two years after the accident he used wheelchair to come to school. After two months, one day he prayed to God with a strong faith and got off his wheel chair and stood up holding on to the fence and with shaking legs. Then within a week, he was able to walk with support. Clinging on to the word of God that “Nothing is impossible with God” he practised continuously with determination and at last he ran for the United States at the Olympic Games and won a medal.

Beloved in Christ, the whole world was amazed at his incredible record. The credit was to his mother. He was exalted by God because he had a strong faith in Him and he followed the wise counsel given by his mother. He did only what was pleasing in God’s sight. It is essential to keep the word of our parents. Let us pay heed to the elder’s advice and be submissive and be blessed.
