Abraham
“Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife…we are brethren.” - Genesis 13:8
Abram and Lot were standing side by side and it was Abram who had to decide whether it was relationship or property. Abram went up from Egypt with his wife and all that he had and Lot with him. Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold. Lot also had flocks and herds and tents. They were dwelling together in tents. There was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. All these days they were united and lived in peace. The Canaanites and the Perizzites dwelling there were waiting to watch the outcome of the dispute which would be worse. But contrary to their expectations, the dispute ended in a peaceful way. Abram spoke to Lot gently and kindly. Abram gave Lot the first chance and allowed Lot to choose first. He said to Lot, “We are brethren; Let there be no strife. Is not the whole land before you? If you take the left, then I will go to the right.” Abram’s strong desire was to make peace. Thus, he generously yielded to resolve the conflict peacefully. Even though Abram was Lot’s uncle and a seasoned senior who should have the prior claim, he was ready to take what was left, so that the bond of love and relationship would not be broken.
Beloved, what about us? What do we give priority to? Is our priority to rights or relationships? Are we breaking off the relationship, claiming just one foot of land? Let us ponder. Abraham, the father of faith is named in 230 verses in the Old and New Testament. We speak about his good nature even today. This world is temporal. There is no surety for our life. Tomorrow is not in our hands. Then why do we convert our loving family into a battlefield? Can brothers and sisters born in the same womb and living in the same place have rivalry? Let us remember Abraham regarding our attitude towards our near and dear ones. Let us yield and maintain good relationship with everyone. God will embrace and bless us.
