Abel
“Abel obtained witness that he was righteous…he being dead still speaks.” - Ephesians 11:4
Both children were brought up in the same house, in the same environment and given the same instructions. Inspite of it, there was a sharp contrast between them in their characters. They were Cain and Abel. They were the first brothers born to the first parents. When they came of age, Abel was a keeper of sheep and Cain was a tiller of the ground.
And in the process of time, both the brothers brought their offerings to God. The Lord accepted Abel and his offering and He did not regard and respect Cain and his offering. Cain became wild with anger. Worse of all, sin was lying at the door to fill him with the mad spirit of murder. He deceitfully took Abel to the field. But Abel had never thought with pride that he was special and superior to his brother. He was too innocent to suspect his brother doing harm to him. But Cain was full of malice and hatred and in a jealous rage he murdered him. He thought that there was no one to compete with him as his brother was no more. Infact it was not Abel but Cain was only destroyed by his deed. Abel was in the presence of God but Cain had gone out from the presence of the Lord.
Beloved, what a pure, innocent heart Abel had to trust his brother who was going to kill him without any suspicion. We are all in need of such right and innocent heart. Abel’s heart was neither haughty nor vain. He did not find pleasure in comparing himself with his brother. He did not have the intention to find fault with his brother and point out to his short comings. How about our relationship with our brothers and sisters? Let us have a good relationship with our relatives as Abel had and follow his ways. How did Abel acquire these good traits? There were no churches, no pastors and no scriptures. Abel looked upon God alone and led a righteous life. He had no mentor to guide him and to be a role model. We need not live-in suspicion that others will envy us and do harm to us. Let us live with a clean, innocent heart. Let us trust in the Lord and do good. Let us have the mind of Jesus who kept the betrayer with Him and washed his feet and called him His friend.
