Living with Compassion
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” - Colossians 3:23
A beggar walked into a restaurant. The manager became angry upon seeing him. But one of the waitresses went to him kindly and asked, "Sir, what would you like?" treating him with the same courtesy she extended to every other customer. She served the food he ordered. The manager was furious. He called the waitress aside and asked, "You served him food, but how is he going to pay the bill?" She replied, "Shouldn't we treat everyone who comes to our restaurant equally, without distinguishing between rich and poor? He may be a beggar, but there is no sign anywhere stating that beggars are not allowed here."
She added, "He came to satisfy his hunger, and I have a responsibility to provide him with food." The manager warned, "But if he doesn't pay the bill for what he ate, you will have to pay it. So, be careful." She went to take another order, and by the time she returned with the bill, the beggar had slipped away. The manager called her over and said, "I told you so, didn't I? Now he has left without paying. You have to pay the bill." She replied, "Very well, sir, I will do that. Please deduct the amount from my salary." He said, "Alright, go and clean up." While she was clearing and cleaning the plates, she found a small piece of paper under the plate the beggar had used. Do you know what was written on it? "Madam, you welcomed me warmly, treated me with great kindness, and fed me a hearty meal. I am the owner of this restaurant. I came here in disguise. You carried out your responsibility faithfully and treated everyone with respect; therefore, I am promoting you to the position of manager," he said.
Similarly, whether the task you undertake is small or big, carry out your assigned responsibilities faithfully, without regard for distinctions between rich and poor. What does the Scripture say? "Whatever you do, do it heartily, as for the Lord and not for men" (Colossians 3:24). Just as the owner visited the restaurant that day, a day will come when the Lord calls us "faithful and upright servants." Indeed, "A faithful man will abound with blessings" (Proverbs 28:20). Let us also dedicate ourselves to living faithfully every day and receiving these blessings.
