Do Not Depend on Your Own Understanding

 

“…Herein thou hast done foolishly…” – 2 Chronicles 16:9

 

One evening, a man was walking along the side of a road. He suddenly saw a snake crawling toward him in the distance. Frightened and confused, he ran to the other side of the road. Sadly, a fast-moving scooter hit him, causing serious injuries. People nearby quickly helped him and took him to the hospital, saving his life.

 

In life, the speed of our thoughts regarding our troubles often far exceeds the actual suffering caused by the troubles themselves, leaving us unsettled. The problems we face do not always bring the hardships we anticipate; rather, it is the decisions we make and the actions we take while panicked by fear that cause the greatest damage. No matter the situation, if we believe that God has prepared a way through it, victory is certain.

 

When Zerah the Ethiopian came with an army of one million soldiers and three hundred chariots and camped at Mareshah, King Asa did not panic. He cried out to God, saying, “Lord, it is easy for You to help the strong or the weak.” God answered his prayer, and Asa defeated the mighty Ethiopian army. However, later, when Baasha, the king of Israel, came against Judah, Asa did not seek God's guidance as he had before. Instead, he panicked and took gold and silver from the temple treasury and gave them to Ben-Hadad, king of Syria, asking for his help. Because he relied on human support instead of God, the Lord was displeased with him, and Asa faced many difficulties.

 

The prophet Hanani warned Asa, saying, “You have acted foolishly in this matter.” If Asa had patiently sought God's direction, the same God who delivered him from the Ethiopian army would have also rescued him from Baasha. He could have continued to enjoy the honour of being a king pleasing to God.

 

May the Lord grant us the grace to be vigilant so that we do not lose our own exalted position as children of God!
