The One Who Conquers Himself

 

"…as also Moses was faithful in all his house" - Hebrews 3:2

 

A person who gains victory over his inner self is the one who truly succeeds in life. When God spoke about Moses, He said, “Moses was faithful in all My house.” Here “God's house" refers to our body or heart. The Scripture states that if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end, we are His house (Hebrews 3:6). A person who is faithful is the one who lives a victorious life. It is impossible to lead others on the path of victory without first achieving victory oneself.

 

The leaders and officials in Daniel's time wanted to find a way to accuse him. They cleverly arranged for a law that required everyone to worship the king. Anyone who prayed to another god for thirty days would be thrown into the lions' den. Daniel knew the consequences, yet he refused to worship the king. As he always did, he went to his room, opened the windows facing Jerusalem, knelt down three times a day, prayed to God, and gave thanks. The reason was that he had victory in his inner man. The Lord preserved him unharmed even in the lions' den.

 

Mark 16:18 states, "they will take up serpents." During the days of John's ministry, when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him for baptism, he said: "Brood of vipers!" He asks, "Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?" (Matthew 3:7). Jesus, too, looking at those who came to Him, said, "Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34).

 

Beloved children of God, observe how John the Baptist addressed people as a "brood of vipers." He was pointing out the presence of the serpent's nature within man. Therefore, before we preach the Gospel, having believed in the Word, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and eternal life we must remove the serpent's nature that resides within us. If we do so, we can live a victorious life. Amen.
