Thirst of the Soul

 

“…(Jesus) said, ‘I thirst” - John 19:28

 

When Jesus was crucified, He said, "I thirst." This was not a physical thirst; it was a thirst of the soul.

 

During His ministry, Jesus declared that He came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Matthew 9:13). Similarly, when John the Baptist saw Him, he proclaimed, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). Indeed, He came specifically for souls. When He looked at the people, He was moved with compassion, burdened for their souls. Before going to the cross, while at the table, He expressed deep concern for the soul of Judas, who was about to betray Him saying, "Woe to that man... It would have been good for that man if he had not been born" (Matthew 26:24). Even while suffering on the cross, burdened by thoughts of the people who mocked Him, watched Him, wept, or refused to accept Him, He said, "I thirst." Therefore, after His resurrection, He commanded: "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Yes, every human soul is precious. If the entire world were placed on one side of a scale and a single soul on the other, the soul would hold greater value. Jesus Christ gave Himself on the cross for the redemption of that soul. We received redemption freely, yet it was purchased through the shedding of His sinless blood. Realizing this, let us safeguard our own salvation and, with concern for the souls of others, proclaim Jesus and pray and act for the salvation of their souls.
