Sound All Around

 

"...so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off" - Nehemiah 12:43

 

The Walt Disney Company introduced a new technology for listening to music what could be described as "stereophonic sound" (sound coming from all directions). They developed a system using loudspeakers to enhance the experience of stage performances, screen visuals, and music. To this day, we enjoy music in a new way through this immersive, surround-sound effect However, thousands of years before this technology existed, Nehemiah practiced something similar. When the rebuilt wall of Jerusalem was dedicated, he organized the people in a unique way. He describes it thus: "So I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall and appointed two large thanksgiving choirs" (Nehemiah 12:31). Starting from a heap of rubbish, the two choirs, moving in opposite directions (left and right) and encircled Jerusalem with songs of praise and finally gathered at the Temple. The choirs led the people into great rejoicing, for God had filled them with immense gladness. Their celebration was "heard afar off." They offered praise, acknowledging God's help in rebuilding the wall despite the opposition of enemies like Sanballat.
