Forgiveness

"...even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye" - Colossians 3:13

While Mahatma Gandhi was in prison, a cruel jailer named Smuts used to beat all the prisoners. However, the fact that Gandhi would utter a specific name whenever he was struck made Smuts pause and reflect; from that day on, he stopped beating Gandhi. One day, Smuts addressed Gandhi respectfully as "Mr. Gandhi" and asked, "I would like to do something for you; what do you need?" Gandhi asked for a book and received it. From that day forward, the two became friends. On the day of his release, Gandhi gifted Smuts a pair of boots he had stitched himself while in prison. Smuts eagerly tried them on and asked, "How did you get the measurements of my feet to stitch them so precisely?" Gandhi removed the shawl from his chest and said, "I stitched them by measuring the scars left when you kicked me with your booted feet." With tears in his eyes, Smuts said to Gandhi, "I am a beast! A cruel beast! Please forgive me." Gandhi's forgiving nature transformed him into a gentle human being.

In the New Testament, Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus replied, "Not just seven times, but seventy times seven. If you do not forgive your brother from your heart for the wrongs he has committed, my Heavenly Father will do the same to you." In his letter to the Ephesians, the Apostle Paul wrote that all bitterness, anger, wrath, and every other evil trait should be put away from you. He said, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

Dear children of God reading this: Jesus has not only washed away our sins with His blood but has also forgiven them. Therefore, we too must forgive others. Today, many families and relationships lack a forgiving spirit; this is the root cause of divisions and conflicts. Let us strive to forgive the wrongs of others. Mother Teresa once said, "Delay in punishing, but do not even hesitate to forgive." Forgiveness is absolutely essential for us as humans to live a happy life. So, let us forgive and forget!
