Navya – Kavya

“Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old” - Proverbs 23:22

"Mom... look at Kavya! She keeps picking fights with me. If I hit her, you shouldn't say a word against me!" Navya shouted as she rushed into the kitchen where her mother was working. Holding a sppon in her hand, their mother asked, "What exactly is the problem with you two? You are constantly fighting!" She sternly ordered them, "Both of you, kneel down and stay there until I finish my work," and walked away in anger. Navya and Kavya knelt down, glaring at each other with angry faces. These two girls would never do any work their mother asked of them. Whenever their mother asked them to help, each girl would say, “You do it!” and push the work onto the other. Because of their constant fighting and disobedience, they gave their mother a lot of stress and headaches.

One day, the two girls went to visit a friend who lived on the next street. In that home, too, there were two children just like them: Preethi and Brinda. Many people were sitting in the house with sorrowful expressions, and the two friends Preethi and Brinda were weeping. Their friend's mother was gravely ill; she was bedridden and unable to even get up. The doctor examined her and explained, "Due to severe mental stress, her body has become extremely weak. She will no longer be able to get up or perform any work." Looking at Preethi and Brinda, the family doctor added, "Your mother became terribly stressed, which is why she has become so frail. If you had listened to her, avoided fighting, and helped her out, she would not have ended up in this condition." With those words, the doctor left. Navya and Kavya, who had been listening to all of this, were filled with fear. "Oh dear! Look at how much we’ve distressed Mom by constantly fighting with each other. What would we do if Mom were to end up just like that other Aunty? From now on, we must never fight again." They decided that, instead, they would live in harmony, listen to everything Mom says, and share the household work between them.

So, dear kids how about you? Are you going to cause your mom distress, or are you going to help her out and make her happy? Everyone should help their parents. Okay?

- Mrs. Sarah Subhash
