"It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes." - Psalm 119:71

 

The wife of the Christian reformer Martin Luther King Jr., once remarked: "Had God not brought certain sorrows into my life, I would never have understood the true meaning of certain verses written in the Book of Psalms!" When troubles and hardships come, we often worry and ask, “Why is this happening to me?” We complain to others. However, these very trials serve as instruments through which God's will is fulfilled in us and through which He moulds and shapes our character. It is precisely when we walk the path of affliction that we are able to witness the power of the Lord. It is along the path of struggles that we learn life's most important lessons. If there were no pain, hardships, or trials, we would continue trusting only in our own strength.

 

It was God's divine plan to elevate Joseph to the position of a great ruler; yet, to reach that destiny, he first had to endure the life of a slave. He had to oversee and manage every aspect of Potiphar's household affairs. Subsequently, he had to face imprisonment. It was only during that time while confined in prison that he realized he had been endowed with the divine grace to interpret dreams.

 

In the very same way, dear friends, God has created each of us with a magnificent plan in mind. It is to bring this specific plan to fruition that God leads us along such paths of trial and testing. As we journey through these experiences, let us pray: "O God, help me to learn the lessons You intend for me, and help me to be moulded into the person You desire me to become." May God Himself strengthen us. Amen.
