Joy

 

“...and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy” - Proverbs 14:10

 

A preacher was speaking at a ‘married couples’ gathering.’ During his address, he looked at a lady seated in the front row and asked, “Does your husband keep you happy?” The wife replied, “No.” Immediately, her husband along with everyone else present looked on in shock. The wife continued, “My happiness does not depend on my husband. If I were to rely on any human being or material object, then in this ever-changing world, as the things around us change, my happiness would also fluctuate. In my youth, I opened my heart to Jesus Christ. At that moment, my heart was filled with joy. From that day forward, I made a decision to remain joyful at all times. Regardless of how circumstances change, and no matter what situation God places me in, I will remain joyful. This is because Jesus is always right there with me.” Immediately, the auditorium erupted in applause.

 

King David declares, “I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.” Therefore, he adds, “My heart is glad.” He implies that true happiness does not stem from being in an exalted position or from possessing material abundance. Rather, he asserts that his true joy lies in having the Lord before him and at his right hand. He states that his stability his unshakable nature is not derived from military might, but solely from the fact that God stands at his right hand. Furthermore, he proclaims, “In Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” “Fullness of joy” refers to a happiness that overflows and abounds; “pleasures forevermore” signifies a happiness that endures eternally a joy that no one can ever take away.

 

Dear All, are you lamenting that there is absolutely no joy or happiness in your life? If so, ask yourself: what exactly do you define as happiness? If your happiness depends on people or material possessions, it will inevitably fluctuate and change from time to time. However, if our joy is found in Jesus the One who never changes and never forgets us then, much like David, we can remain joyful whether we are seated on a throne, tending to sheep, or hiding in a cave.

 

Likewise, we can sing praises even while in chains or in prison, just as Paul and Silas did. If Jesus, our Savior, dwells within us, we will possess an unfailing and enduring joy. Let us hold fast to Jesus, embrace true happiness, and inherit the Lord's blessings.
