He Has Risen
“And to godliness…and to brotherly kindness...” – 2 Peter 1:7
When Hitler conquered Russia, every church in the land was demolished and razed to the ground. Yet, somehow, a single church managed to survive Around that same time, the Easter celebration of Jesus’ resurrection arrived. On the festival day, the church was overflowing with people. The pastor, who was preaching with great joy and boldness, was arrested in the early hours of that morning. Before the police led him away, he requested permission to speak just three words to his congregation. Permission was granted, but strictly on the condition that he spoke no more than three words. Looking out at his congregation, the pastor raised his voice and, with all his might, joyfully proclaimed: “Jesus is alive! Hallelujah!” These words like sparks of fire and explosive powder pierced deep into the hearts of the believers. Consequently, fear was cast out from the heart of every believer, and they were filled instead with a spirit of boldness. They, too, began to chant: “Jesus is alive! Hallelujah!” These three words shook the very nation that had sought to obliterate Christianity. The heart of everyone who heard this declaration began to burn brightly with zeal for the Lord. The man who received one talent buried it out of fear. While fear serves a necessary purpose, there are times when it hinders us from acting on God's behalf.
Joseph of Arimathea who had previously lived in fear was suddenly received extraordinary boldness and courage; he went to Pilate and requested the body of Jesus. From where did this boldness and courage originate? It was out of love for Jesus that he gave Him the new tomb he had reserved for himself. To Joseph of Arimathea who gave his tomb to Jesus selflessly and without any expectation of return that very tomb was restored after Jesus’ resurrection. Let us, too, give what belongs to us to the Lord.
Dear children of God reading this! God has endowed us with a multitude of talents and abilities. How are we utilizing them? Let us offer what is precious to us to God wholly and wholeheartedly. If we give merely to garner praise from others, or under compulsion, such giving is of no avail; it will not be credited to our account in God’s ledger. Each one should give as he has decided in his heart not reluctantly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver.
- Mrs. Priscilla Theophilus
