A Life Reflecting Christ
“Let your light so shine before men…" - Matt. 5:16
Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in the city of Florence, Italy. She is known as “The Lady with the Lamp.” She came from a wealthy and influential English family. Endowed with beauty, intellect, and deep compassion, Florence was her father's beloved daughter. In addition to her native English, she was fluent in several other languages, including Latin, Greek, German, Italian, and French. Possessing a naturally helpful disposition, Florence desired to pursue nursing training so she could serve the common people. At the age of 16, she pursued her studies in Germany and later served for several years as a nursing superintendent in London. During the war that swept across Europe in 1854, countless people were wounded and lost their lives. Filled with the love of God, Florence Nightingale selflessly served the wounded day and night. In recognition of her service, Queen Victoria honoured her with the Royal Red Cross award. Living a life of simplicity, Florence used the monetary awards she received to establish a nursing school. Her book, Notes on Nursing, continues to serve as a standard textbook for nurses to this day. She passed away at the age of 90. We celebrate May 12, her birthday as International Nurses Day. Just as Jesus Christ declares in Matthew Chapter 5, saying, "You are the salt of the earth" and "You are the light of the world" we, too, must strive to dispel the darkness in the lives of those around us and serve as beacons that kindle light in their existence. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."
Our Lord Jesus Christ lived His life demonstrating this truth; He went about doing good throughout the earth, and with deep compassion, He met the needs of the people. He stood as a shining lamp of hope for those dwelling in darkness. Our lives, too, should be lived in a manner that brings glory to the Father. May God grant us the grace to shape our lives after the example of Florence Nightingale, a woman whose legacy of glory continues to be celebrated even after her passing!
My dear beloved ones, may God bestow upon us the grace to live lives overflowing with His love, dedicated to the well-being of others, and reflecting His divine nature!
