The Result of Prayer
“Hear me, O LORD, hear me…” - 1 Kings 18:37
Elijah’s prayer was not merely for the destruction of the prophets of Baal, nor was it simply for thunder to roar down from heaven! Rather, his desire was that through the manifestation of the Lord’s power the people of Israel would turn their hearts back toward God. Let us reflect upon three specific actions Elijah took at that moment.
Restoration: Elijah called out to all the people, saying, “Come near to me.” As the people gathered around him, he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been broken down. Yes, beloved, we too must repair our hearts. Are there not many things within each of our hearts that require correction? Take a moment to reflect upon this. In Mark 7:21–23, Jesus Christ calls upon us to set our hearts right. Are you ready to repair your heart?
A New Beginning: The second thing Elijah did was to commence the work with faith. He built an altar, dug a trench around it, arranged the wood, cut up a bull and laid it upon the wood, and then poured water over both the sacrifice and the firewood. We, too, have now completed the task of repairing our hearts. The next step is to embark upon our life of faith. While the act of repairing is relatively simple, to ensure that our hearts do not revert to their former broken state, we must cultivate the habit of walking with God every single day.
The Outcome: Then the fire of the Lord fell; it consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the soil, and even the water that was in the trench. When all the people witnessed this, they fell face down and declared, "The Lord He is God!" Behold what a magnificent miracle this is! It is something we could not even begin to imagine. Indeed, to receive blessings from the Lord, we must set ourselves right and live a transformed life. Let us pray to the Lord, asking Him to help us remain steadfast in our life of faith, just as Elijah was.
Correction + Restart + Result = Preparation
Let us prepare ourselves. And let us help others prepare as well.
