Show Compassion

“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him” - Luke 10:33

The well known North Indian missionary, Sadhu Sundar Singh, was in the habit of wandering to distant places to preach about Jesus Christ. On many occasions, he would cross the Indian border and travel through snow-capped mountains and valleys into Tibet. Once, while traveling in this manner, he was walking along a treacherous path covered in ice. He then came across a fellow traveller who was exhausted and had collapsed in the snow. The man who had been walking ahead of Sadhu Sundar Singh had passed by the dying man, acting as if he had not even seen him.

Sadhu, however, saw him and was moved with compassion. He covered the man as best he could, hoisted him onto his own shoulders, and carried him safely to the next village. Tragically, he later discovered that the man who had walked ahead of him lay dead by the roadside, frozen stiff in the cold. What was the secret behind this? Because the first traveller had gone alone, he could not withstand the cold and perished. Sadhu Sundar Singh, by carrying another man, allowed the body heat from one to transfer to the other; consequently, both men survived.

The Scriptures declare: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Because Sadhu showed mercy to a fellow human being and carried him, both he and the man he carried survived. The man who had walked ahead thinking only “It is enough if I survive; why should I help him?" chose to go on alone; and because of that isolation, he could not endure the cold and died. My beloved children of God, this is precisely the lesson that Jesus Christ taught us through the parable of the Good Samaritan. The mercy that was withheld from the priest and the Levite was extended by the Good Samaritan. Why? Because that man was found to be in need of help. The first two individuals failed to provide that help; it was the Samaritan who did so. Therefore, Jesus declared that mercy would be shown to him alone. Paul says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Amen! May the Lord Himself bless us!
