World Labour Day
“…for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts” - Haggai 2:4
Labour Day greetings to all children of God! Through the prophet Haggai, this encouraging promise was given to people who were tired while working on building the temple. Today, this same promise belongs to all workers who celebrate ‘World Labour’ Day.
In Genesis 1:26-30, we read: "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it... God commands mankind to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and have dominion over it. He also provided everything on earth for food. The Lord commanded that man must work. Psalm 15:5 states that he who does not lend his money at interest, nor take a bribe, shall never be shaken. Proverbs 16:11 declares that the just weight and scales used by merchants belong to the Lord. Proverbs 20:10 and 23 warn that differing weights and differing measures are an abomination to the Lord. Therefore, those in business must fear God and conduct their work with honesty and integrity according to His Word.
Jesus Christ, too, was a worker. In Mark 6:3, the people asked, "Is this not the carpenter?" When Jesus taught in the synagogue in the very town where He had grown up His disciples and the local people were astonished; they marvelled at the wisdom possessed by this man who practiced the trade of carpentry. Thus, no profession is lowly or beneath one's dignity; rather, every honest trade is a blessing. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 states: "If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat." It is the Lord's will that we work and earn our living.
There is a secret to success in any profession: To ensure that your work is blessed, pray without ceasing. Read and meditate upon the Scriptures. Give cheerfully unto God. The Lord will bless the work you do and the labour of your hands.
On this Labour Day, perform your respective tasks with faithfulness, integrity, and enthusiasm. Through the Prophet Haggai, God blesses us with the assurance: "I am with all of you, O workers."
