The Reward According to Our Actions

 

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them:…" - Matthew 7:12

 

A supervisor who had worked for an engineer specializing in construction projects approached his employer and said, "Sir, I have served you faithfully for many years. Now, due to old age, I wish to retire. Therefore, I request to be relieved of my duties." The engineer immediately looked at him and replied, "Sir, please build just one more house; after that, you may take your retirement." The supervisor agreed, saying, "Very well," and proceeded to supervise and complete the construction of that house. Upon its completion, the engineer said to him, "Sir, you have worked faithfully for me for many years. Therefore, I present this very house to you as a gift." The supervisor was stunned. He thought to himself with deep regret, "Oh, if only I had known beforehand that this house was meant for me, I would have built it with far greater excellence, using only the finest materials to make it truly beautiful!"

 

We must perform every action we undertake with excellence, keeping in mind that we will receive a reward from the Lord for it. A reward commensurate with our deeds will surely come from the Lord. What a magnificent blessing that is!

 

In the Bible too, we find the story of a disciple named Dorcas (Tabitha) who lived in the city of Joppa. She sewed tunics and garments for widows and those in need, and she performed many other good deeds as well. Consequently, when the Holy Spirit inspired the writing of her story in the Bible, He described her as one who "was full of good works and charitable deeds." He uses the qualifier "full of" signifying an abundance to describe her actions. When she became sick and died, people washed her body and placed it in an upper room. They quickly sent for Peter, believing that if he came and prayed, she might live again. When Peter arrived, he knelt down and prayed, and said, “Tabitha, arise.” She opened her eyes and sat up she came back to life. She received a reward according to her good deeds.

 

Let us, too following the example of Dorcas perform whatever good deeds lie within our power for the sake of others. For God will reward each person according to their deeds. To those who, without growing weary, persist in doing good and seek after glory, honour, and immortality, He will grant eternal life. Yes, let us remain faithful in the stewardship of that which has been entrusted to us. Let us continue to do good works without losing heart and thereby receive blessings from the Lord.
