Be Compassionate

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." - Colossians 3:23

Hi kids! How are you all? I’m sure you’re saying, “We’re doing great, Akka!"? Great! So, who here loves traveling long distances? Especially if it involves traveling through an area filled with mountains and rivers enjoying the beauty of nature along the way wouldn't that be a joyful experience? You’d probably say, "It’s so much fun!" Well, kids, that is exactly how Ranjith spent a day traveling by bus with his parents. As they travelled, he happily admired the scenery, exclaiming, "Look over there! Isn't that beautiful?" Along the way, some people were riding bicycles, while those on motorcycles sped past. Others travelled in cars, and a massive container truck rumbled by. The bus Ranjith was on, however, was moving along at a steady, moderate pace. Ranjith continued to enjoy the sights, munching on roasted corn and chatting with his mother as they went.

A short while later, suddenly “Bang!” a loud, crashing sound. "Oh no! Mom!" cried Ranjith; clutching tightly to a metal bar, he managed to steady himself and avoid falling. Everyone on the bus got off to see what the problem was. They discovered that an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction having nowhere to swerve out of the way had collided with Ranjith’s bus. The auto driver was frightened, trembling, and struggling to breathe, holding someone’s hand tightly in fear. If you were in that situation, kids, what would you have done? In moments like this, we should speak kindly and calmly to reduce the fear of the injured person. We should try to give first aid and take them to the hospital quickly. However, the people gathered around specifically the bus driver, and the conductor began scolding the man who had been driving the auto-rickshaw. After all, he had caused the collision unintentionally; surely, he deserved to be forgiven, didn't he? An elderly gentleman, who had been observing the entire scene, stepped forward and offered whatever assistance was needed. Witnessing this left a profound impact on Ranjith's heart inspiring him to resolve that he, too, should strive to be a compassionate person. The bus then resumed its journey. In Ranjith's mind, the elderly man's act of kindness replayed like a movie scene.

Dear Children, Jesus has taught us to "love others just as you love yourself." Did you know something? Whatever we do for the poor and those who are suffering is considered as if we have done it directly for Jesus Himself. If we show compassion toward them and offer them our help, then Jesus, in turn, will show compassion toward us in our own times of trouble and come to our aid. So, what are you waiting for? If you show compassion and help others, you, too, will become one of Jesus' own cherished children!

- G. Esther Selvi
