A Difficult Situation
"...The Lord turned and looked upon Peter..." - Luke 22:61
A student failed every subject in his final annual examinations. The headmaster was furious. "You have studied in this school for ten years, yet you haven't passed a single subject! Were you stuffing your ears with cotton while lessons were being taught in class?" he scolded angrily. The boy stood there silently. Declaring that he was no longer fit to study, the headmaster issued him a Transfer Certificate and sent him away. The headmaster's words "Were you stuffing your ears with cotton?" kept ringing repeatedly in the boy's ears. He covered both his ears tightly. The world, now silent, felt strange and different to him. A new idea began to form. Just as the headmaster had suggested, he experimented with stuffing his ears with cotton. He designed a new device. That device is what we now call "earmuffs." Students preparing for exams bought them so they could study without distractions. People working in noisy environments bought them as well. The business met with moderate success. Then, the First World War broke out. Military commanders issued orders making it mandatory for soldiers to wear earmuffs to prevent deafness caused by the thunderous roar of artillery fire. He designed the earmuffs to fit conveniently inside soldiers' helmets and in doing so, he became a millionaire. That man was Chester Greenwood. It was the difficult situation he faced that paved the way for a brand-new invention.
Similarly, a difficult situation arose in the life of Peter one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ and brought about a profound transformation in his life. Peter was a constant companion to Jesus during the days of His earthly ministry. Yet, during Jesus' final journey, Peter went so far as to deny Him, claiming he did not even know who Jesus was. No sooner had he spoken these words than a rooster crowed. At that moment, the Lord turned and looked directly at Peter. Peter immediately recalled the words the Lord had spoken to him "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times" and, stepping outside, he wept bitterly. This distressing situation transformed Peter into a broken yet humble man, enabling him to stand zealously for Christ until the very end.
Dear readers, Chester Greenwood took an idea that came to him during a difficult situation in his life and utilized it effectively to achieve a remarkable feat. Similarly, Jesus looked upon Peter during a moment of crisis. It was precisely that situation that brought about a profound transformation in Peter's life. What kind of circumstances are many of us facing today? If, instead of losing heart because of such circumstances, we channel our focus toward generating fresh ideas, we will discover new avenues; by walking a new path, we create space for innovative thinking to emerge. We will surely triumph in life!
