Wait Patiently
"I waited patiently for the Lord; He inclined toward me and heard my cry" - Psalm 40:1
We are often filled with wonder when we observe the advancements made in various fields such as science, economics, and politics. However, behind every great invention, there stand numerous individuals who have made immense sacrifices.
The moment the name George Stephenson is mentioned, what immediately comes to mind is that he was a renowned scientist the inventor of the steam locomotive. Yet, behind his groundbreaking inventions lie countless stories of a life filled in tears and struggle. Possessing exceptional wisdom and practical aptitude, he endured a life of poverty with immense patience; by waiting upon the Lord with unwavering faith, he eventually attained great heights of success.
Unable to attend school during the day, he spent his days herding cattle and pursued his education by attending night classes. He had a deep passion for analysing the technical intricacies of scientific instruments and dedicated himself to endeavours in that field. To sustain his daily needs, he even worked as a cobbler.
During his youth, he worked in a coal mine. On one occasion, when a machine broke down, many attempted to repair it but failed to resolve it. Stephenson who was not considered important by others and no one had specifically invited to intervene, volunteered of his own accord and successfully repaired the machine. Everyone present was struck with astonishment. The owner, deeply impressed, commended him and presented him with a substantial sum of money as a reward. It was by utilizing this sum as capital that he went on to invent the steam locomotive. Driven by the desire that no student should ever have to endure the hardships he faced during his own formative years, he subsequently established numerous free research laboratories.
Similarly, in the Scriptures, we find the example of Abraham, who waited with extraordinary patience and eventually witnessed the fulfilment of the promise regarding his descendants. Listening to the word of the Lord, Moses overcame numerous challenges and, with great patience, led the Israelites to Canaan. In James 5:11, we read: “Indeed, we count those blessed who patiently endure. You have heard of the patience of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings.” Long-suffering is a fruit of the Spirit. Let us, too, wait patiently and receive that which the Lord has promised us. Amen.
