The Bible
“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;…” - Psalm 19:7
Rajan and Kumar were good friends. They earned their livelihood by cutting firewood and selling it every day. One day, both of them went into the forest to cut wood. As evening fell, Kumar noticed that Rajan had brought back a much larger load of firewood. He asked, “How were you alone able to cut so much wood?” Rajan replied, “I cut wood for a while, then I rest for a short time. Afterward, I resume cutting.” The next day, Kumar followed Rajan’s advice; he took intermittent breaks and then continued cutting wood. Yet, even on that day, he was able to cut only a small amount of wood. The following day, curious to see exactly what Rajan was doing, Kumar hid himself and observed him closely. Kumar watched as Rajan, during his rest periods, took the tool used for cutting wood, his axe and diligently sharpened it. It was only then that he understood how Rajan was able to cut more quantity of wood.
Today, does our own spiritual life appear dull and blunt, rather than being sharp? The excellent tools that sharpen and refine us are the reading of Bible and prayer. In Psalms 19:7–8, the Psalmist David has penned the magnificent attributes of God’s Word: “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” Let us resolve to read the Scriptures systematically and to pray faithfully every single day. When the missionary C.T. Studd served in the jungles of Africa, he was 82 years old. In an environment with no electricity, he would read the Scriptures by the light of a kerosene lamp. In contrast, we today are blessed with electricity and a wide variety of Bibles ranging from children's Bibles to study Bibles etc. We can even read the Scriptures with ease right on the mobile phones we use every day! Because they diligently examined the Scriptures daily in this manner, we read in Acts 17:11 that the people of Berea were of nobler character than those in Thessalonica.
Dear friends reading this, you may have made many resolutions at the beginning of this year. It is uncertain how many of those we will actually follow through on. However, let the resolution to read the Scriptures systematically and to pray take the very first place on our list. Let the Bible not remain merely an ornamental object on our bookshelves but rather become a fragrant anointing oil that fills our hearts and souls with its sweet aroma. Amen.
