God's Record
"…Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece..." - Nehemiah 3:20
When I entered full-time ministry, I thought ministry only meant preaching, distributing tracts, or doing children’s ministry. But instead, I was given different kinds of responsibilities, such as going out for office work, taking children to school, picking up and dropping off ministry workers. In simple terms, my role was mainly to drive two-wheelers and four-wheelers. At first, I felt discouraged. Since I did not have many qualifications, I thought God had placed me in this role because I was not fit for greater work. I even looked down on myself and the work I was doing. I did not consider it as ministry at all. It never even crossed my mind that this, too, was a form of ministry. On one occasion, I went to pick up a minister who had come to review the affairs of our ministry. He stayed for a day and then prepared to leave. As I drove him to the bus stand, he said to me, "Brother, what you are doing is truly a great ministry. You came to pick me up at just the right moment, and now you have brought me back safely. God will surely bless you." Even after he had returned home, he contacted me by phone and said, "You are truly performing the work that God desires, and you are doing so with patience." From that day forward, I have carried out my ministry with a spirit of prayer. I am now witnessing the fruits of this attitude in both my personal and family life.
When Nehemiah was rebuilding the wall, many people in the community joined hands with him in the construction effort. Each person took responsibility for a specific section and completed it. The entire wall was completed in just 52 days. When the Holy Spirit inspired the recording of these events in the Bible, He described the actions of the various builders; yet, when referring to one specific individual, He singled him out for special commendation, adding a distinctive qualifier. While the text simply states that the others "repaired and built," it notes that this one particular individual "repaired and built with great diligence." Although his contribution to rebuilding the wall was modest, he performed it meticulously and with great care doing it specifically for the Lord, driven by the love for Him that filled his heart. Neither Nehemiah, nor Ezra, nor his fellow workers took notice of this. It is the Holy Spirit Himself who highlights this detail in the Scriptures. That man was Baruch. For our God is not one who looks at outward appearances; He is the One who looks at the inner heart.
Dear All, even if you have been entrusted with only small responsibilities within the church or in ministry, perform them joyfully, doing them as unto the Lord. Do not seek praise or promotion from men. Offer your contribution faithfully and wholeheartedly, doing it for the Lord. Your true heart is your actual contribution. God will record it in the books of Heaven, commend you for it, and reward you accordingly. Amen.
