The Contribution of Time
“…and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her” - Luke 10:42
Many of us are familiar with Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. He was a man who carried immense responsibility, yet his life reflected deep spiritual discipline. One day, during his presidency, a few senior government officials had scheduled an early morning appointment to seek his counsel. They arrived at his residence as early as 5:00 AM. As they approached his room, they could hear him speaking to someone inside. This surprised them, because they assumed they were the first visitors of the day. Curious, they wondered who else had been given an appointment before them, and they patiently waited outside. When Abraham Lincoln finally emerged, they asked him, “Sir, we arrived as early as five o'clock this morning, yet it sounded as though you were speaking with someone.” Abraham Lincoln replied, “It was no one else; I was simply speaking with the Lord. It is my habit to speak with the Lord before I speak with any man.” They were all greatly amazed. They realized that the secret behind Lincoln’s wisdom, clarity, and successful leadership was not merely his intelligence or experience, but his consistent habit of spending personal time with God, even in the midst of his demanding responsibilities.
In the Bible, we see a similar example in the life of Jesus Christ. While traveling, Jesus entered a village where two sisters, Martha and Mary of Bethany, welcomed Him into their home. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His words. Martha, however, was distracted by the many tasks involved in serving; she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me.” But Jesus gently responded that Mary had chosen what is better, and that choice would not be taken away from her. We read that Mary devoted her time to the Lord.
Dear readers, are we dedicating our time to God? God has graciously bestowed upon us 24 hours each day. How much of that time do we set apart specifically for Him? Let us completely refrain from spending our time on unnecessary and unimportant things. Today, for most people, the cell phone consumes the majority of their time. Yet, the very inventor of this device once remarked, "I spend only 5% of my time on my cell phone." Let us reflect on how we are utilizing our time. If we choose to spend our time with God seeking Him in prayer, meditating on His Word, and living for His purposes we will experience true blessing. There is absolutely no doubt that every single minute spent at the feet of God will strengthen and empower us.
