The Contribution of an 80-Year-Old
"…for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness” - 2 Samuel 17:29
When King David, fleeing in fear from his son Absalom, fled his city and arrived at Mahanaim, an 80-year-old man named Barzillai came forward to support David and his men. He brought beds, wheat, barley, different kinds of beans, honey, butter, and cheese for them to eat. At that time, David did not hold the royal office; he was merely an ordinary man that is to say, a former king. Yet, without hesitation or neglect, the octogenarian Barzillai brought all manner of supplies to support David.
Age is not a barrier to making a contribution. The mere desire to act is sufficient. If 80-year-old Barzillai felt compelled to offer whatever assistance he could to the former King David, consider how much more vital your contribution is today for the sake of God, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and for the advancement of His ministry.
Situations of such need may occasionally arise within the ministry. At such times, your contribution becomes absolutely essential. Barzillai offered this assistance to David without any ulterior motives or expectations. Once David's situation stabilized and was going back, David invited the 80-year-old Barzillai, saying, "You must come with me; I will provide for you and care for you personally." Yet, Barzillai did not think to himself, "How wonderful! I shall go along with him." This was because the man had not offered his contribution with any expectation of receiving a reward in return.
Dear All! If we make our contribution for the sake of the Lord, it is certain that we will receive the reward for our efforts at the appointed time. Therefore, age should not be a hindrance to serving God, nor should we wait for a specific opportunity. When we are always ready to serve God selflessly, we will surely receive blessings from Him. This truth is beautifully expressed in Hebrews 6:10: "For God is not unjust so as to forget." Therefore, let us serve God with enthusiasm!
