Jepthah the Rejected
“...and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh" - Judg. 11:11
Raju regularly attended all the prayer meetings at church. But he would keep crying in all the prayers. Seeing this, the pastor asked Raju, "Why are you always crying?" Raju replied, "My friends whom I trusted betrayed me and left me. I could not bear it." The pastor told him, "When the people we trust leave us, our hearts break. But when we pray to the Lord who never leaves us, He heals our broken hearts and even brings peace with those who left us."
In the Bible, Jephthah also lived a life of rejection by his own family. He was born to another woman, not the lawful wife, and must have faced much shame because of it. The sons of his father’s wife hated him and drove him away, saying he had no share in the inheritance. So Jephthah left and became a warrior. One good thing about Jephthah was that he sought the presence of God and told all his affairs before the Lord at Mizpah. All of Jephthah's brothers gathered and came to meet him. The reason! A war broke out. So those who chased him said, "You must be our leader and commander of all the armies." Why did the Lord allow Jephthah to be rejected? It was for this very reason. If he had not been rejected, his victory would not have seemed so great. Because he was driven away, the elders themselves came searching for him and invited him back. Jephthah went with them to battle. Since he depended on the Lord, God stood with him and gave him victory. The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah.
Today, we too may be carrying different kinds of shame or rejection. We may be pretending to be happy but crying with pain in our hearts. To change our reproach, to heal our wounds, the Lord, who cares for us, keeps coming with us like a shadow. We are not orphans, not abandoned, like Jephthah, when we do not tell all our affairs to men but to the Lord, He will take us to heights that we have not reached, that we have not even imagined, and He will make us a blessing to others.
