A Season of Dedication

 

“Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes” - Job 42:6

 

In many traditional churches, today is observed as Ash Wednesday. The days from today until Easter are called the Lenten season. In the Bible, “ashes” symbolize humbling oneself before God. For example, in Job 42:6, Job says, “I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” That is, Lent is a time to humble ourselves, examine our shortcomings before God, examine ourselves, know ourselves, and grow in our spiritual life.

 

"Lent" means "spring." Even nature sheds its old leaves and puts forth new ones during these times. Therefore, these are the days when we can let go of our old sinful natures and experience renewal in our inner being day by day.

 

It is good to make many external resolutions during these days and keep them for 40 days. But most importantly, there must be a change of heart. To live as those who fulfill the will of the Lord in our lives, we must dedicate ourselves to making our bodies holy and a temple for the Lord to dwell in, and to doing what is pleasing to Him.

 

Let our daily prayer be: “Lord, teach me to do what pleases You.” And like David prayed: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the everlasting way”.

 

Let us surrender our hearts and bodies to the Lord, abstain from all forms of immorality, fast and repent with a heart of devotion, and receive the full blessings of Lent. Amen.
