Discipline is Good

 

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” - Proverbs 22:6

 

In North America, the government decided to protect a bird species that was on the verge of extinction. Therefore, a separate enclosure was built in a zoo, and the birds were protected, and all the necessary facilities were provided for them. Once the bird population increased, they were released into the outside world to fly freely. Because they were raised in isolation and protected, these birds easily became prey to predators and began to perish. The very effort that was made to prevent the extinction of the bird species became the reason for its destruction.

 

Similarly, some of the comforts we provide for our children can become the cause of their downfall. The birds raised in the zoo did not know how to hunt. Likewise, children who are overly pampered cannot withstand failures. Show your children the outside world. Let them seek God's strength to overcome the problems in it and achieve victory.

 

In the Old Testament, Eli, a servant of God, failed to guide his sons in the ways of the Lord. Because he did not teach his children good things, he heard that they were associating with the women who gathered at the entrance of the tabernacle, and he warned them, saying, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all these people about your wicked deeds. My sons, do not do these wicked things.”

 

Dear Friends! Solomon, during his reign as king of Israel, lacked no comfort. It is he, who experienced everything, who says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Children should be raised with loving discipline. If we show only love, there is a chance they might go astray. If we show only strictness, there is also a chance they might drift away from us. Therefore, let us guide the children whom the Lord has graciously given us, with God's help. If we show them the right path, which is Jesus, from a young age, they will not abandon it even in their old age. If we fail to teach them this, society and nature will have to teach them.
