The God Who Sees

 

“…Thou God seest me:…” - Genesis 16:13

 

What a wonderful name for our Lord! The Lord does not only see Hagar; He sees each one of us. In the Bible, He saw many broken hearts and wiped away their sorrow. Because Sarah had no children, she gave her maidservant Hagar to her husband Abraham as a wife. When Hagar became pregnant, she despised her mistress. Because Sarah treated Hagar harshly, she ran away from her mistress. God saw the anguish of her heart and blessed her. In that wilderness, she named the Lord who spoke to her, "You are the God who sees me," saying, "I have seen the One who sees me here."

 

Similarly, in 1 Samuel chapter 1, Peninnah tormented Hannah, who was childless. Hannah poured out her broken heart before God in prayer. After that, she was no longer sad. God saw the anguish of her heart and gave her the prophet Samuel as her son. See what a great blessing! Our God is not like humans who look at the face; He looks at the heart. He sees the tears we shed in secret, and He sees our broken hearts. He is compassionate and answers our tears.

 

He saw the suffering that the Israelites endured at the hands of their taskmasters. The same God who heard their groans and immediately sent Moses as a deliverer to rescue them, sees our tears. He hears the cries of our broken hearts. Surely He will deliver us and comfort us. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

 

Let us hold on to such a compassionate God. Let us pray with all our hearts like Hannah, and then we will not need to be downcast. The same God who saw Hagar sees us too. He will comfort, console, and deliver us. Let us be hopeful; our wounds will be healed. Amen.
