Let the Self Die
“The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; …” - Proverbs 15:33
A young man once went to George Müller, the man of faith, and asked him the reason for his success. He replied, "I was crucified with Christ; my self died. That is the reason for the success of my ministry." Then the young man asked, "Sir, what does it mean to die to oneself?" He told him, "Son, go to the cemetery, read the names of the deceased written on the tombstones, and speak ill of them. Then, after some time, praise them. After that, come back to me."
The young man did as he was told, went to the cemetery, spoke ill of them, and then praised them, and returned. George Müller asked him, "Did those buried in the graves get angry with you?" He replied, "No, they didn't say anything." "When you praised them, did they become proud and appreciate you?" he asked. "No, they didn't say anything," he replied. That is what 'dying to oneself' means. The praise of others should not make us proud, nor should their criticism affect us. Müller said that attaining this state of mind, with the help of Jesus Christ who gave His life on the cross, is what dying to oneself means.
If we look at Paul in the Bible, he endured many sufferings to fulfill God's will. When they were in a situation where they had to stay on the island of Malta, they lit a fire for warmth and shelter from the rain and cold. As Paul gathered some sticks and put them on the fire, a poisonous snake came out because of the heat and fastened itself onto his hand. When the people saw this, they said, "This man is undoubtedly a murderer." When he escaped to the shore, they said among themselves that vengeance would not allow him to live. When Paul heard these words, he restrained himself and shook the insect off into the fire. The people were watching, expecting Paul to swell up and die. When they saw that no harm came to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.
Dear beloved in Christ, may our self also die on the cross every day. Then the name of God will be glorified.
