Maintain Holiness

 

“And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter...” - Ruth 3:10

 

This verse from the story of Ruth is a small effort made by Naomi, Ruth's mother-in-law, to rebuild the life of her widowed daughter-in-law. Naomi desires for Ruth to live a proper, blessed life. However, this effort turned into a night of testing for Boaz, a servant of the Lord. Let us see how he overcame it.

 

According to the custom of the Israelites, Boaz was resting after the day's work during the harvest season, singing, dancing, eating, and drinking. At that time, Ruth was lying at his feet. Boaz could have taken advantage of this situation. But Boaz kept himself holy. Moreover, he calls Ruth "my daughter" twice. See what sublime holiness!

 

It is not a great thing to be holy when all our surroundings are holy. The Lord is watching how our impulses and instincts are in adverse situations. The Lord expects our thoughts, desires, and imaginations to be holy in all circumstances. If our emotions and thoughts become defiled, our spiritual growth will cease.

 

The temptation that Joseph faced (Genesis 39:12) lasted only a few minutes, and he escaped from it. But Boaz's temptation lasted all night. Boaz overcame it through his holy thoughts, words, and actions. See what exalted holiness! Look at David, such a great prophet, psalmist, and believer, yet he fell into temptation.

 

Beloved child of the Lord, trials come to us every day. The devil's aim is to lead the Lord's children astray. Therefore, be watchful and pray. May the Lord Himself help us to hold onto His word and live a holy life!
