The Form of a Servant

 

“Who, being in the form of God… But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” - Philippians 2:6,7

 

A few hundred years ago, the slave trade was very common. Many people worked as slaves for their masters. Some were sold for money. Seeing this, a Moravian missionary felt burdened to liberate these people from slavery and to proclaim the true Jesus Christ to them. He decided to go to the West Indies in the Pacific Ocean. He realized that he could not connect with them unless he himself became a slave. So, he offered himself as a slave to the masters there, becoming a slave himself, wearing the clothes of a slave, eating the food of slaves, and working alongside the slaves. Thus, day and night, he proclaimed the message of salvation to the slaves who were with him and won many slaves to become servants of Christ. Because God loved us, He sent His Son from heaven to earth. God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son. What great love! See how many things Jesus Christ gave up for us!

 

What Jesus Christ gave up was "heavenly glory"! Not only that, He humbled Himself to become "human," and even lower, He humbled Himself to become a "servant," washing the feet of His disciples. He went down yet another step, being crucified as one of the "criminals."

 

What is God communicating to us through this? That we should be willing to humble ourselves to any extent so that others may know the Lord. Children of God! We cannot make an impact on the lives of others without coming down from our own position. That Moravian missionary, like Jesus Christ, surrendered himself as a servant. In his time, he accomplished what God had planned to do through him. What about us? Will we surrender ourselves, letting go of our pride, status, honour, and influence, so that God's will may be fulfilled in us?
