Good News for the Whole World

 

“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger…” - Luke 2:7

 

Every day we hear many different kinds of news in the world. Not all the news we hear is good news for everyone. Moreover, often it is news that causes us pain, news that causes anxiety, news that we cannot share with others. But 2000 years ago, a message was given to shepherds tending their flocks, and it was good news that would bring joy to all people.

 

Among the people of Israel, shepherds did not have much respect or status. They were not greatly recognized by other people. Their lives were mostly spent in the forests and mountains. It was in such circumstances that this good news was announced to them. That was the good news of the birth of Jesus.

 

Perhaps if this good news had been announced to people living within the country, it is uncertain whether they would have believed it or not. But God first announced this good news to the shepherds who were rejected and marginalized by society, wandering in the wilderness. They heard it, believed it, went to Bethlehem, saw Jesus, and proclaimed this good news to many others.

 

Therefore, the good news of Jesus' birth is good news for everyone in the world for the young and the old, the poor and the rich, kings and those of high status not just for a particular country or a few communities. It is good news for all, because Jesus Christ was born on this earth to remove the sins of all people in the world and to save them. Let us also pray that all the people throughout the world may come to know the good news of Jesus' birth. Like the shepherds, let us do our best with all our strength. Surely, God will be glorified. May our Christmas celebration be meaningful.
