A Meaningful Festival

 

“And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word…" – Luke 1:38

 

I was serving as a pastor at the C.S.I. church in Aruppukottai. One day, a woman came to me and invited me, saying, "Sir, it is my son Samuel's birthday today. Please come to pray at 6 PM." I went to their house at 6 PM to pray. The entire house was beautifully decorated. Many relatives had also come. As soon as I entered the house, I could smell the aroma of biryani. There was a birthday cake and everything. Samuel's mother asked me to pray. I asked the mother, "Where is Samuel, whose birthday we are celebrating? Please call him." The mother replied, "Sir, Samuel is studying in college in Madurai, so he is not here right now." This is how we too celebrate the Christmas festival. New clothes, house decorations, good food. But Jesus Christ, whose birthday we are celebrating, is not present. The Christmas festival we celebrate should be a meaningful Christmas festival. For that, a meaningful dedication is needed.

 

According to the verse mentioned above, Mary said, "I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word," and because she surrendered herself, we are celebrating the Christmas festival today. Are we servants of the Lord like Mary? A servant means one hundred percent obedience. Mary's obedience is evident in the words, "Let it be to me according to your word." Mary too faced a great struggle in her heart. If an unmarried woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a child, who can possibly agree to that? But even though Mary had the question in her heart of how this would happen, she obeyed the angel's words and completely surrendered herself to the Lord as His servant. She humbled herself, saying, "Let it be to me according to your word." Therefore, let us also clothe ourselves with humility. Just as Jesus was exalted by the Father, we too will be exalted.
