The Light Has Dawned
“The people which sat in darkness saw great light...” - Matthew 4:16
James Hannington was born into a middle-class family in England. He went to Zambia in Africa as a missionary. That country was used by Europeans as a centre for the slave trade. James struggled in many ways to improve the lives of the people there. Due to illness, he returned to England. Later, he was sent to Uganda. He showed love to all people without discrimination. A local chieftain, envious of his progress, sought to kill him. Therefore, he had Hannington brought to a public platform and killed him by stabbing him with a spear. Just as James Hannington had envisioned, today 90% of the people in Uganda are Christians. How true is the saying, "Missionaries are not buried, but sown." The blood shed by the missionaries in Uganda did not go in vain. James Hannington's vision also did not go unrewarded. The true light, Jesus, continues to shine in the dark continent even today. Yes, the sacrifice and selfless actions of many become the foundation for redeeming those who are in the darkness of sin and bondage.
A similar incident occurred during the birth of Jesus Christ. When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the wise men, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the wise men. The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream in Egypt and said, "Arise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel," and they came as he had commanded. This happened so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, and Jesus Christ, who would bring light to the world, was born.
To enable people living in darkness and sin to see the true light, the Lord Jesus was incarnated as a man in this world. Even today, there are millions around us who do not know the message of His birth! If their lives of darkness are to change, Jesus Christ must be born in their hearts. Are you, who are reading this, ready to shine for Jesus and proclaim the good news of His birth to others? Come forward to make your contribution during these Christmas days. Let us reflect! Let us act immediately for Jesus. Let us spread the good news of His birth!
