Temptation of the Devil

“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil” - Matthew 4:1

A rare type of fish was caught on a fishing boat in China. They immediately cooked it and ate it. It was more delicious than any fish they had ever had before. They caught it in abundance and brought it to shore after 4 days. They had put the fish alive in little water and brought it, when they cooked it and ate it, it did not have the same taste that they had eaten in the sea 4 days before. Therefore, they could not sell it at a high price in the market. The reason why the fish had lost its taste was because, even though it was alive in a little water, it was sluggish for 4 days without it, when compared to being playing and jumping in the sea, so they knew that its taste had decreased. Now, to bring the fish to shore as they are in sea condition, they put natural enemies – the baby sharks. The fish were afraid of the sharks and were running around, so they were lively until they were brought to shore. When they cooked and ate the fish, it tasted the same as if it had been cooked in the middle of the sea. When they sold it in the market, the value of the fish increased day by day.

We too should think that it is good to be tempted by the devil. We face many kinds of temptations from the devil. If Jesus needed the devil's temptation, how much more do we need it? Only a green tree has suffering, but what suffering does a dead tree have? We should not be afraid of suffering. A devotee may ask the Lord, "What do you have for me today?" We should ask the same thing. We should consider suffering as work. What work do you have for me today? The worker deserves his wages. If we are hardworking, the hard suffering we have will be rewarded accordingly.

Jesus Christ suffered more than anyone else. The devil, who wanted to destroy him on the cross, was disappointed. The apostle Paul suffered everywhere he went. Paul called it a good fight, and for this he says that there is a crown of righteousness for me as a reward.

The devil will give us the same kind of fatigue and pain he gave Nehemiah for the work of building the kingdom. Just as Nehemiah built the wall in 52 days, we too will work hard in the midst of opposition and reap the rewards. Amen.
