The Blind Leading the Blind

 

“Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee” - Psalm 51:12,13

 

A missionary named 'John Hyde', also known as 'Prayer Hyde', once set out for India by ship to begin his ministry. When he boarded the ship, he was given a letter. In it, his father's friend had written: "John, I will continue to pray for you until you are filled with the Holy Spirit." Reading this, John Hyde became furious, saying, "Am I going to India as a missionary without being filled with the Spirit?" After a while, he was convinced by the Spirit and realized the emptiness within him and that he was not even the least qualified to go as a missionary. So, he began to cry and pray to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It was of no use. Then the Spirit made him realize that he was not yet saved. At a gospel meeting, someone came to him and asked, "Missionary, have you been saved?" The question broke his heart. He prayed earnestly, "Lord, give me the anointing of the Holy Spirit and save me; Otherwise, I will go to America without preaching the gospel.". The Lord heard the prayer and saved John Hyde and freed him from the bondage of sin, filling him with the anointing of the Spirit, and spirit of prayer and power, beyond measure. After this, while he was praying for the people, the people were saved, filled with the spirit of prayer, and received the anointing.

 

These days, we can see especially young people, serving without the experience of salvation. They deceive themselves that they are saved by singing beautifully, playing musical instruments, praying, or being the children of ministers and pastors. They not only stumble themselves but also cause others to stumble. Jesus also said to such people, "Can the blind lead the blind? Will not both fall into the pit?" John Hyde, who was inspired by God, repented and was saved and was anointed. Just as those who ministered after being filled with the Holy Spirit would do well to first receive the assurance of forgiveness of sins and then minister. Only then will the verse, "Sinners will repent to You" (Psalm 51:13), be fulfilled.
