Knowing the Time

 

“And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea…” - Gen.41:49

 

Even though the summer sun was shining brightly, a grasshopper was singing, dancing, and playing in the field. Nearby, an ant was working hard, carrying a grain of rice. The grasshopper said to the ant, "Come, let us play together and tell stories." The ant said, "I cannot come now. I must store grain to withstand the rainy season." The rainy season also came, but the grasshopper could not go out in search of food and grew hungry, but the ant had plenty to eat and lived joyfully. Seeing that, the grasshopper realized its foolishness.

 

In the Bible, when Joseph was made governor of Egypt, God revealed that there would be seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Joseph wisely collected one-fifth of the harvest during the good years and stored it in large storehouses much as the sand on the seashore. After the years of prosperity, seven years of famine began. There was famine in all the lands, but Egypt still had food because Joseph had prepared in advance. The people came to Joseph for food. Joseph opened the storehouses and gave grain to the people. The people ate and were happy. Not only in Egypt, but all the nations came to Joseph to buy grain. He also fed his own family.

 

Dear children of God! You too must know and act wisely on time. When you do so, not only will you be nourished, but you will also be able to bless others. We read in Amos chapter 8 that there will be a famine, not of lack of food, nor of thirst, but of not hearing the word of the Lord. Therefore, when you receive the word, read it, meditate on it, and store it in the treasure of your heart. Amen.
