Watchman Who Does Not Sleep

 

“Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” - Psalm 121:4

 

Sleep is a gift that God has graciously given us. Sleep is necessary for a working man to rest. The Lord gives sleep to those he loves, and we read in the Bible that "I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone make me lie down in safety" (Psalm 4:8).

 

Today, even those who have millions of dollars are struggling to sleep. There are also those who regularly take sleeping pills to sleep. Doctors say that not sleeping is harmful to the body. When we are under stress, we do not sleep, and even in such situations, we do not wake up and look to our Lord who protects us.

 

A woman named Maureen Weston from Petersburg, England, has achieved the feat of staying awake for 449 hours without sleeping. She did this from April 14 to May 5 while sitting in a rocking chair. Many people say that in today’s fast-paced modern world, there is no time for sleep.

 

It is said that the average person needs at least 6 hours of sleep a day. What a great privilege of grace that God, who protects us while we are sleeping soundly, keeps us awake and protects us. How strange that His eyes are always watching us and His ears are always open to us. Are we grateful for that? Just as the eyelid protects the pupil of the eye, so does our God protect us. Let us surrender our lives into the hands of our God, who protects us, His children, from all evil and the works of the enemy, realizing His precious love.

 

Oh God, who protects me day and night without fail! Hero of Calvary! Help me to be vigilant and guard my life. Amen!
