To Receive the Crown of Life
“Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day…" – 2 Timothy 4:8
In Romania, a servant of God named Richard Umbrandt was doing the Lord's work and living a life of zeal for the Lord. Because of doing the work of God, the communist government of that country arrested him and imprisoned him. He suffered unspeakable suffering in prison. They pierced his body with iron bars. They locked him in a dark room and brainwashed him with various words. They tortured him without giving him proper food. In this situation, his wife was also imprisoned. His only son was left alone from his father and mother. However, they did not turn away from the love of the Lord. The love of Christ filled Richard Umbrandt's heart. The Spirit of God possessed him completely. Many tortures, afflictions, sufferings, hunger, starvation, loneliness, nothing could separate him from the love of Christ. "To me, to live is gain, and to die is gain," he stood with zeal. Seeing that he was steadfast in the Lord without denying Christ, the government could do nothing and released him. When he was released from prison, he won many souls for the Lord. He finished his race with glory and received the eternal crown of life that does not fade away.
The apostle Paul also lived zealously for the truth and endured many hardships, persecutions, bonds, insults, beatings, and prison experiences. In the midst of all this, he worked hard to speak the word of God. Paul says this: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Tim.4:7)
Beloved in Christ! Let us also, always filled with the love of Jesus Christ, and united with the Spirit of God, run with patience the race that is set before us, that we may obtain it. As Paul says, let us stand at the threshold for the souls that are perishing. Let us finish the race that God has set before us and receive the crown of life that is ours.
