Compassionate Eyes
“And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd..." - Mark 6:34
A man, on a snowy evening, was trying to cross a frozen river to reach his home. He got stuck in the snow and was nearly dying. At that time, a large group of horsemen came riding fast. The man did not ask help from the first ones but waited for the very last rider. He asked him for help to cross. The horseman lifted the man onto his horse, crossed the knee-deep river, and even rode a few more miles to drop the man safely at his home.
The horseman asked him why he didn't ask the other horsemen for help. The man replied, "I have looked into each of your eyes. But only in your eyes could I see a caring heart." Little did the man know that the horseman who had taken him across the river that night was Thomas Jefferson, the President of the United States.
Yes, some difficult circumstances reveal us and those around us. The time gap between the birth of John the Baptist and the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ was only six months. John was the one who prepared the way for Jesus Christ and the one who was a burning and shining lamp. In this context, when he learned that John the Baptist had been beheaded on Herod’s birthday, Jesus went alone with his disciples to a deserted place. Meanwhile, a large crowd came to where he was. When Jesus saw the great crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. He taught them many things. When he saw many sick people, he had compassion on them and healed them. No matter how difficult the circumstances, Jesus Christ acted with compassion when he saw people in need.
God’s people who know Christ! What do your eyes reflect? There are many helpless people in this world who are waiting for mercy in those eyes. Remember your brothers and sisters who are suffering. Do not forget the orphans and the poor. May many see the compassion of Jesus Christ in you and in your eyes. May the image of Jesus Christ be revealed in you, knowing that mercy will prevail before judgment. May the Lord Himself bless you.
