The Price of a Soul

 

"...and he that winneth souls is wise" - Proverbs 11:30

 

The great Alexander the Great, on his deathbed, made three final wishes. First, his coffin should be carried by the best doctors. Second, he asked that his gold and riches be scattered along the path of his funeral procession. Third, he instructed that his hands be left hanging outside his coffin, open and empty. The commander asked him to explain it. Alexander replied, "Even the best doctors could not prevent my death. All the wealth I gained is left behind in this world. I came into this world empty-handed, and I will leave the same way. Let the world see and understand this truth. He said this to show the world that what is considered great on earth, what is earned, does not come back even when we die. We read about such an incident in today's scripture.

 

A rich man’s land yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, “I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones to store all my grain. Then I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry.’” But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your soul will be required of you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?”

 

Dear beloved, the Lord urges us to store up treasures in heaven. One way to do that is by winning souls for the kingdom. No amount of money can buy forgiveness of sins or eternal life. But Jesus has already given us both freely through His precious blood. When we leave this world, we can take nothing with us except the souls we led to salvation and the good works we did

 

If our hope and goal is only in the perishable things of this world, our condition is miserable. Therefore, let us be wise and win souls. Let us be determined to lead others on the path of salvation. Let us preach the gospel with care, whether the time is favorable or unfavorable. The Lord will bless your efforts.
