The Image of Humility

 

"...for I am meek and lowly in heart…" - Matt.11:29

 

There is a Catholic meditation ashram in Chennai. It has many rooms. Catholic bishops sometimes come there and meditate alone. FMPB Brother Patrick Joshua also used to rent a room there for two or three days if he could not go to the missionary work sites and pray. Once when he was staying there, a person wearing a vest and a banyan would come every day to clean the room and change the old water and bring fresh water. Brother Patrick thanked him and asked, "What are you doing here?" He said, "I am the principal of Loyola College, sometimes I come like this and dedicate myself to serving in the ashram." Despite being the principal of the college, his dedication to working in the ashram, regardless of his education, position, or status, greatly affected Brother Patrick Joshua.

 

In John 13, we see Jesus with his 12 disciples. Suddenly, he gets ready to wash their feet. What a sign of humility. The Lord Jesus is not a God who forces us to do anything. He washed the feet of the disciples so that all 12 disciples could see. The disciples were also watching what Jesus did.

 

Dear friends who are reading this, Jesus said I am gentle and humble in heart, Take my yoke upon you and learn from me. Let us put humility in the Christian life. Only those who are humble will receive blessings. The Bible also says that He gives grace to the humble. Let us learn to be humble every day like Jesus. The disciples who were with Jesus were used throughout the world because they were humble. If we are to become salt and light to this world, we definitely need humility!
