The Love of the Cross
"But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ" - Ephesians 2:13
It was a time when the Cold War was raging between the communist countries and the United States. Although there was a ban on openly preaching the gospel in Romania, an American minister had gone to do some secret ministry. One day, while walking down a deserted street in the bitter cold, the sound of a man's whistling surprised him for a moment. Because he was whistling the hymn "Jesus, our Savior," and was walking along.
He was happy to see such a person in a country that rejected Christ, and he followed the man. After walking quietly for a while, he began whistling the hymn after him. Upon hearing the song, the Romanian turned back in surprise, hugged the servant, and realizing that he did not understand his language, he placed his hands on his heart. Then he raised his hands straight to the sky and made the sign of the cross. With unbridled joy, the two, who lived in a different language and culture, and were unrelated to each other, were united by the love of the cross in a few minutes.
The apostle Paul states this in his letter to the Ephesians. You who were once far away have now been brought near in Christ Jesus by his blood. The Lord has saved us who were far from the love of the cross and given us the privilege of being united with him. The love of the cross is being poured into our hearts every day to leave the darkness of sin within us and rejoice in the light.
Dear friends! In the days when we did not know Christ, we were far from the cross. We have accepted Jesus as our personal Savior as a result of someone declaring His love to us. Many are still far from the love of this cross. Who will vouch for such people? People of many languages and people of many races are still far from Christ. Today, as you and I are united by the bridge of Christ's love, let us make many people find His love.
