The Donkey That Spoke
“Do everything without grumbling or arguing...” - Philippians 2:16
We often call others donkeys. But there are things we can learn from donkeys. Today we will look at the donkey of the prophet Balaam. King Balak invites the prophet Balaam to curse the people of Israel. The prophet inquires of God. God says not to go. He says I will not go to the people the king sent. The king sent more important officials again. The prophet Balaam says that God does not agree and does not send them and inquires of God again. God is angry and says go.
The prophet mounts his donkey and goes. Then the donkey sees an angel standing in the road with a drawn sword. Immediately the donkey turns away and goes into the field. The prophet struck the donkey. Then, as he passed through the vineyards with walls on both sides, the angel stood with his drawn sword. Now, seeing the donkey, he pressed the prophet’s foot against the wall. The prophet struck the donkey with his staff. The Lord opened the donkey’s mouth. The donkey did not grumble or complain, and said, “Have I ever acted this way toward you before?” The donkey did good and suffered harm to save the prophet’s life. When God gave the donkey the opportunity to open its mouth, it could have blamed its master and complained but it gently questioned with patience. Immediately, the Lord speaks. There, the Lord first asks for justice for the donkey.
Beloved ones! Do you also say that you are honest in your home and workplace and suffer hardship? God will one day make your truth known. According to the verse, “A faithful man shall receive a full measure of blessings” (Proverbs 28:20), you will receive a full measure of blessings. Are you complaining that you cannot speak my case? Are you grumbling and complaining in your heart? Stop grumbling and complaining today. The Lord who sees you also sees the harm that happens to you. He will plead your case. According to the verse, “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7), cast all your anxiety on Him and be quiet. God will speak for you the things you need to speak. Be patient, the Lord will plead for you.
