Lend a Helping Hand
"Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it." - Proverbs 3:27
An old man worked as a shoemaker in a small tent near the bus stand. His long-standing desire was to see Jesus Christ in person. He wanted to give him a pair of shoes that he had made with his own hands. So he saved up money, bought beautiful quality leather, and made a pair of shoes very neatly. He was waiting for Jesus' arrival and praying for it. Days and months passed. One day, this old shoemaker saw an old man walking barefoot in the scorching sun with sore feet. He thought that he would give him a pair of shoes. He went into the tent. But there was nothing except the shoes that he had made for Jesus Christ. He immediately apologized to Jesus and gave the old man those expensive shoes. He also put them on his feet, thanked him and left.
He, on the other hand, began to collect the money he had spent on repairing his shoes, wanting to do something else for Jesus Christ. One day in his dream, a man dressed in white came to his shop. When he realized that it was Jesus Christ, he cried because he had no shoes to give him. Jesus Christ embraced him and said, “Son, whatever you did for one of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Immediately the old man was overjoyed.
In Matthew 25:31, when Jesus comes in glory with all the holy angels, and sits on his glorious throne, he looks at those standing on his right and says, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you. I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me. When the righteous did these things to us, he will say, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Yes, when we are able to do good, when the circumstances are right, let us help others as much as we can. We will see the reward for it in this world and in the hereafter.
