The Wheat That Died for Jesus
"…Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” - Mark 16:15
After Jesus resurrection, his disciples began to preach about Jesus, about repentance, and about the kingdom of God. Because of this, many were saved, and many of them willingly accepted suffering, imprisonment, and death. The list of them goes on and on, such as Peter, Stephen, Thomas, and Paul. Many more came to India and Tamil Nadu and preached about Jesus. If they had not come, salvation would have been impossible for us.
Born in 1815 AD in England to a noble family, he graduated from Cambridge University as an excellent student and was ordained as an assistant bishop at the age of 26. He was the one who introduced the gospel light of Christ in Sivakasi, where crackers that explode with sound and light are manufactured. Once, while working as the Secretary of the C.M.S. South India in the kanyaKumari district, the scene he saw bothered him. He saw an ox tied to one side of a plough in a field and a woman belonging to a lower caste being treated like a cow and a slave, and he gave the first voice against slavery. With great love for the oppressed people, he dedicated himself to sharing the love of Christ. When he went to a village, he was not allowed to drink the water from the well there . Since he was a Christians, a boy gave him some goat's milk to drink and quenched his thirst. He decided to give up his position and live among the people. He went from village to village and preached the gospel. Born into a noble family, one day he lowered himself to the ground to drink a cup of molasses poured by a woman in his hat. He established 25 churches in Srivilliputhur, Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar, Injar and Ezhayiram Panna. He was afflicted with illness in a very short time and participated in the kingdom of God on 22nd October 1858 AD at the age of 43. He was supposed to be buried in the tomb of the nobles, but was buried under a tamarind tree.
People like him who worked with such dedication are still needed to preach the gospel today. Like Rockland , who had love, compassion and humility like Jesus, we are also called to preach the gospel. Shall we wholeheartedly dedicate ourselves to proclaim Jesus Christ and the forgiveness of sins that He offers to the unreached villages and people through tracts and village ministries? Amen.
