Helkath Hazzurim
"...if you bite and devour one another...” - Galatians 5:15
Do you know what Helkath Hazzurim is? It is a place. Let's see why this name came up. There one grabbed each other's head and stabbed each other in the ribs with their swords and fell together. That is why the place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim. The experience of falling. During David's time there was a war between Joab's army and Abner's army. In that battle no one had a shield to protect them. Instead there was a sword to attack. Due to this they started stabbing each other.
Such is the case with those who hate one another. Instead of protecting themselves from the harm that comes from the hateful actions of others, they focus on working against them. All this is called Helkath Hazzurim, to take revenge on the one who has disrespect, not to see the one who does not see, to despise the one who despises, not to honor the one who does not honor, not to help the one who has not helped, not to show love to the one who has not shown love, and to slander about the one who has neglected.
Beloved! This is still happening among friends and in many families today. How are we doing? Are we bent on hurting the person who hurt us without seeking God's grace to heal our hurt? Do we protect ourselves with the shields of love, patience, humility, and gentleness? Let's think. Overcoming evil with good and turning the other cheek to those who slap one cheek is the lifestyle Jesus Christ sets before us. As in the above verse, if we bite each other and eat each other, we will perish. Let us repent and live in peace.
The mind of Christ Jesus must be in each of us. Amen!
