Magic show

“And do you seek great things for yourself?” – Jeremiah 45:5

Once we were doing children’s ministry in a village. That day’s main teaching was being faithful. Song and memory verse about faithfulness were taught. Activity was done and games were played. All the children were attentive, enthusiastic and enjoyed the session. In the end we performed a simple magic. The kids clapped their hands and expressed their astonishment. With this the session came to an end and the children dispersed. But one little boy remained and asked us how we performed that magic trick. We tried to manage him saying that he could not understand it. But he firmly said, “Just now you told us not to tell lies and not to deceive others and to be always faithful. Then why are you cheating us?” His words were a slap in our faces. That day we took a resolution not to perform magic to show off and make a really big impression and attract the attention of the crowd. We decided not to act as magicians but to prioritize witnessing. 

In Acts 8th chapter we read that there was a certain man called Simon who practiced sorcery and astonished the people and they thought he was someone great. This sorcer wanted to do miracles and signs as Philip did. He saw that through the laying on the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given. He offered money to get the power thinking that the gift of God could be purchased. Then Peter reprimanded him harshly as a warning. 

Yes, beloved, it is a devilish thought to show off proudly and impress others and draw their attention. We long for recognition and appreciation from others. But is this right in the sight of God? Let us examine ourselves carefully. Let us feel that the Lord our God alone is worthy to receive praise, honor, power and exaltation. Let Holiness be our watchword. Hallelujah!
