The fish that obeyed

“…one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.” – Romans 5:19

Dear kids, today we are going to listen to an interesting episode in the Bible. Are you all ready? Shall we find how an enormous fish obeyed God.

There was a great city named Nineveh. The people of Nineveh were very wicked. If we keep on committing sins, God will get angry, won’t He? Suppose, we make the same mistake again and again our parents scold us or punish us. God told prophet Jonah to go to Nineveh and warn them to turn from their evil ways or otherwise God will overthrow the city. But Jonah went to Tarshish. In those days there were no cars, bikes or aero planes. Then how did he go? Any right guess! Yes, you are correct. He went by ship. Then, do you know what happened?

Great wind blew and there was a mighty tempest on the sea. The passengers were afraid and everyone cried out to his gods. It was of no use. They threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the loads. They wished that at least their lives were saved. They decided to cast lots to find out who the cause for the trouble was. The lot fell on Jonah. He explained to them who he was and how he disobeyed God. He did not stop with this. He himself told them that the sea would be calm if they picked and threw him into the sea. At first, they hesitated but they had no alternative. As the sea was growing more tempestuous, they threw him into the sea. What a great surprise! At once the sea became calm. This created fear in the heart of the people and then understood the magnificent work of God. What happened to Jonah who was thrown into the sea? The Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah without biting and chewing him. The fish obeyed. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish 3 days and 3 nights. Then the Lord spoke to the fish and it vomited Jonah on to dry land. The fish did everything according to God’s commands.

Dear children, did you notice how an ordinary fish obeyed God’s words? It could not eat anything for three days and it could not swim as it wished. It had suffered but it obeyed and did God’s will. We have been called to lead a life of submission to God’s will like the fish. Shall we submit ourselves to God to do His will?
